What is SWER? Single Wire Earth Return is a low-cost method of rural power distribution using a single overhead conductor and the earth itself as the return path.

  • Single overhead wire (live)
  • Earth is the return conductor
  • Isolation transformer required
  • 12.7kV or 19.1kV typical
  • Used in remote rural areas

Step-by-Step Sequence

01 Power generated at substation
02 Isolation TX feeds SWER line
03 Current travels single conductor
04 Current through customer TX
05 Current returns through earth
