Course Overview

Arc Flash Awareness for Electricians is an online, self-paced safety course that explains what an arc flash is. An arc flash is a sudden release of energy when an electrical fault arcs through the air, producing intense heat, light and a pressure blast that can cause severe burns even at a distance. You will learn to recognise the hazard, the risks of working on or near energised equipment, the basics of arc-flash calculation and equipment labelling, and how arc-rated PPE (arc-rated clothing, a face shield or hood, insulating gloves and hearing protection) is selected from the risk assessment. For electricians, electrical workers and supervisors responsible for electrical safety, this introductory awareness course runs about two hours and finishes with a short knowledge assessment, a certificate of completion and CPD points.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an arc flash?
An arc flash is a sudden, dangerous release of energy when an electrical fault arcs through the air. It produces intense heat, light and a pressure blast that can cause severe burns and injury – even at a distance. Recognising the hazard is the first step to working safely around energised equipment.
What PPE is used for arc flash protection?
Arc-rated PPE is selected based on the equipment’s arc-flash risk assessment and can include arc-rated clothing, a face shield or hood, insulating gloves and hearing protection. The right level depends on the task and the assessed energy.
Who should complete arc flash awareness training?
Electricians and electrical workers who work on or near energised equipment, plus supervisors responsible for electrical safety.
Can I do arc flash awareness training online?
Yes – NECA Learn’s Arc Flash Awareness course is fully online and self-paced, so you can complete it on any device without booking a classroom session.
Does this course count toward my CPD or licence renewal?
This course records self-paced professional development, with a certificate of completion documenting your learning. It is not represented as an approved licence-renewal or skills-maintenance course. Renewal requirements are set by your state or territory regulator; see our state-by-state electrician licensing guide and confirm what applies to your licence before relying on any course for renewal.
