Course Overview

This online, self-paced course covers the risks of respirable crystalline silica, the fine dust released when cutting, grinding or drilling materials such as concrete, stone, bricks, tiles and engineered stone. You will learn how silica dust is generated, the serious and irreversible lung diseases it can cause (including silicosis), and how exposure is assessed. It also covers practical dust controls such as water suppression, ventilation and respiratory protection, along with safe work practices for WA worksites. This is an awareness-level course for electricians and trades workers in Western Australia who may disturb silica-containing materials, and their supervisors. There is no fixed duration. On completing the knowledge assessment you receive a certificate, and the course counts toward CPD.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is crystalline silica and why is it dangerous?
Crystalline silica is a natural mineral found in stone, concrete, bricks, tiles and engineered stone. Cutting, grinding or drilling these materials releases fine respirable silica dust which, when inhaled, can cause silicosis and other serious, irreversible lung diseases.
What does this crystalline silica course cover?
How respirable crystalline silica is generated, the health risks, exposure assessment and dust controls, and safe work practices – for workers in Western Australia.
Who should do crystalline silica training?
Construction and electrical workers in WA who may disturb silica-containing materials, and the supervisors responsible for managing dust exposure.
Can I do this course online?
Yes – online and self-paced through NECA Learn.
Does this course count toward my CPD or licence renewal?
This course records self-paced professional development, with a certificate of completion documenting your learning. It is not represented as an approved licence-renewal or skills-maintenance course. Renewal requirements are set by your state or territory regulator; see our state-by-state electrician licensing guide and confirm what applies to your licence before relying on any course for renewal.
