Managing Risks of Crystalline Silica (QLD)
This course has been specifically developed to meet the WHS silica criteria published by WorkSafe Queensland.
Course Overview
Queensland requires crystalline silica training for workers who do high-risk processing of crystalline silica substances, or who may be exposed to silica dust because of it. This course was built for that duty: ten lessons covering everything the training must address.
Built to the published training criteria
WorkSafe Queensland publishes the criteria that silica training must cover under section 529CD. This course is designed to address all matters in those published criteria, and NECA’s compliance team has signed off a mapping of the course content against each criterion. The criteria, and the training record form employers use, are on the WorkSafe Queensland website.
The ten lessons
- Health risks of RCS exposure, including silicosis and its signs
- Identifying crystalline silica in materials, including the four regulated forms
- Interpreting Safety Data Sheets
- Workplace exposure standards for RCS
- Regulatory requirements for controlled processing
- Controlling the risk of silica exposure, from water suppression to enclosed cabins
- Respiratory protective equipment, including fit testing and the clean-shaven rule
- Implementing silica risk control plans and SWMS
- Air monitoring, including the 14-day exceedance reporting duty
- Health monitoring and what happens with the results
Who needs this training in Queensland
If the work cuts, grinds, drills or crushes concrete, masonry, stone or older engineered stone still in place, in ways that make dust, this training covers the workers doing it and anyone at risk of breathing the dust it makes.
Related training: Working outside Queensland? Our Silica Awareness course covers crystalline silica risks for workers across Australia, and Western Australian crews have their own Managing Risks of Crystalline Silica (WA) course.
Employers must keep a record of the training, and WorkSafe Queensland publishes a record form for exactly that. Your certificate from this course is the evidence that goes in the file.
