Course Overview

Fall Prevention Systems is an online, self-paced awareness and refresher course for the electrical, communications and construction trades. Fall prevention means stopping a fall before it can happen, using guardrails, edge protection, covers, work platforms and travel-restraint systems, rather than arresting a fall after it starts. It sits higher in the hierarchy of controls than fall arrest, which makes it the preferred approach on any job at height.

The hierarchy of fall control

Australian WHS practice requires fall risk to be managed at the highest practical level: first eliminate the need to work at height, then use passive prevention such as guardrails and platforms, then work-positioning and travel restraint, and only then fall arrest, with administrative controls supporting each layer. This course focuses on the prevention layers, where good planning removes the risk at its source.

What the course covers

  • Passive prevention: guardrails, edge protection, covers and platforms, and where each is the right call
  • Travel restraint: keeping workers physically unable to reach a fall edge, and how it differs from fall arrest
  • Choosing the right control for the task, so prevention is designed in rather than bolted on

Who should take this course

Anyone who works at height or plans that work: electricians and communications techs on roofs and elevated structures, construction and maintenance trades, and the supervisors and site managers who choose the controls. It suits induction, ongoing CPD and refresher use between formal training.

How the course works

Fully online and self-paced: about one hour on any device, finishing with a knowledge assessment. Your certificate of completion is issued on passing and records CPD hours for your professional development record.

The working at heights pathway

When a fall cannot be prevented, Fall Arrest Systems covers the PPE that stops a fall safely, and for ladder work see Ladder Safety. See all three courses at Working at Heights Training.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between fall prevention and fall arrest?
Fall prevention stops a fall from happening at all – using guardrails, covers or restraint that keeps you away from the edge – while fall arrest stops a fall already in progress. The safety hierarchy favours prevention first.
What does fall prevention training cover?
The hierarchy of fall controls, identifying fall hazards, and selecting prevention measures such as guardrails, screens and travel-restraint systems.
Who should do fall prevention training?
Electricians, trades and supervisors who plan or perform work at heights.
Can I do it online?
Yes – online and self-paced through NECA Learn.
